Album containing around 80 humorous and satirical drawings b - Lot 272
Album containing around 80 humorous and satirical drawings by Potache (pseudonym of Fernand Benazet), some of which are double-sided. The title page contains a description of the album: "The cartoon drawings in this album were all done by a very young student at the Ecole des Beaux Arts de Bordeaux (architecture section!) from 1895, when he was 18 years old. While these originals may not have any real "artistic" value, they do provide a humorous and irrefutable snapshot of this special period of late 19th-century local color. When the friends of the Musée de Bordeaux came up with the amusing idea of organizing a "Belle Époque" exhibition in Bordeaux in October 1957, Mr. Jean Gabriel Lemoine, the museum's director, found these caricatures well-suited to the occasion. Some were even reproduced in an article about the exhibition in the newspaper "Le Sud-Ouest Dimanche" of 10/20/1957.
Many of these satirical drawings seem to depict the same characters in different guises, and it's possible that some of them refer to characters from the said school in particular, who served as targets for their young pupils, albeit without any subject matter".
40 x 31 cm
Two newspaper clippings and the "Belle Époque" exhibition catalog are included.
