Note: The statue Quand même is a tribute to the Belfort resistance during the siege of 1870-1871, and its title echoes the motto of the patriots in 1880: "car malgré tout, il faut quand même résister" ("in spite of everything, we must resist all the same"). Initially, the commission given to the artist was a tribute to Adolphe Thiers, the negotiator of the armistice with Germany. However, the sculptor gave pride of place to the people's struggle, depicting an Alsatian woman grasping a soldier's rifle and defying the enemy with her eyes. Portraits of Thiers and Denfert-Rochereau adorn the base of the Place d'Armes monument.
