MERCIÉ Antonin (1845-1916) d'après - BARBEDIENNE Ferdinand ( - Lot 54
MERCIÉ Antonin (1845-1916) d'après - BARBEDIENNE Ferdinand (1810-1892) founder Quand Même Bronze with brown patina Founder's stamp on the back of the rock Moulded oak contresocle Height 61 cm (excluding base) Total height: 66 cm Note: The statue Quand même is a tribute to the Belfort resistance during the siege of 1870-1871, and its title echoes the motto of the patriots in 1880: "car malgré tout, il faut quand même résister" ("in spite of everything, we must resist all the same"). Initially, the commission given to the artist was a tribute to Adolphe Thiers, the negotiator of the armistice with Germany. However, the sculptor gave pride of place to the people's struggle, depicting an Alsatian woman grasping a soldier's rifle and defying the enemy with her eyes. Portraits of Thiers and Denfert-Rochereau adorn the base of the Place d'Armes monument. Bibliography: Maëva Abillard and Marie Pottecher (eds.), Alsace. Rêver la province perdue. 1871-1914, cat. expo. Musée national Jean-Jacques Henner in partnership with the Musée Alsacien de Strasbourg, Paris, 2021.
