CHINA Gilded painted wood sculpture representing a Fô dog, its half-open mouth revealing a movable wooden bead, its left front paw resting on a ball, its body decorated with radiating motifs. It stands on a base painted black to simulate stone. (wear to the gilding, small cracks to the wood, chips to the base). Height : 29 cm - Width : 32 cm - Depth : 12,5 cm Details Lions playing with a brocade ball is a folkloric activity during traditional Chinese festivals, to get rid of bad luck and pray for good fortune. People hope that the lion will bring them luck and that the ball will ward off bad luck. An ancient legend has it that lions used to produce milk for their young from their paws, so peasants would leave hollow balls in the hills for the lions to play with, leaving their milk inside.
