Note: Georges Duhamel, a medical officer who volunteered to serve, spent 48 months in the army, and wrote about his Verdun experience in "Vie des martyrs" and "Civilisation 1914-1917". Duhamel, who was a doctor, experienced "the other side of hell" and wanted, with this "Vie des martyrs" (1917), to work towards the memory of these men confronted with pain, the terror of amputation, agony, but also grace.
