LORYOT François - Les Secrets moraux, concernant les Passion - Lot 362
LORYOT François - Les Secrets moraux, concernant les Passions du Coeur Humain. Paris, Chez Claude Chappelet, 1614 - 1 vol. in-4° - bound in full vellum - 911 pages + table - Title engraved by L. Gaultier, bearing the arms of Louis XIII, to whom the work is dedicated. (binding in poor condition, spine and headbands damaged - wormholes, wetness, yellowing, pitting) Note: This philosophical discourse divides the various passions into two blocks: that of the concupiscible appetite, which comprises 6 passions (Love, Hatred, Desire, Flight, Delight and Sadness), and that of the irascible appetite, which comprises 5 (Hope, Despair, Audacity, Fear and Anger). It takes the form of fifty questions and answers dealing with various human behaviors. The book was sent by its author, the Jesuit Loryot de Laval, to Marguerite de Valois, who responded to his misogyny by publishing her Discours sur l'excellence des femmes the same year.
