CHINA - Lot 16
CHINA Tubular porcelain vase with polychrome decoration and gold highlights of a Fô dog, topped with calligraphic motifs. The rim is hemmed with a double gold fillet. Mark on reverse. (wear to decoration) Height 29 cm - Diam. 13 cm Note : The lions playing with a brocade ball correspond to a folkloric activity during traditional Chinese festivals, in order to get rid of bad luck and pray for good fortune. People hope that the lion will bring them luck and that the ball will ward off bad luck. An ancient legend has it that lions used to produce milk for their young from their paws, so peasants would leave hollow balls in the hills for the lions to play with, leaving their milk inside.
