Wooden electrostatic machine element generating electricity by friction between a glass disk and leather pads. Metal and turned wood handle. Bears a label "Machine invented by Ramsden in 1773". (incomplete instrument, wear, glass holes). Height Height : 38 cm Note: "In 1768, Jesse Ramsden perfected his turntable machine held by wooden posts, the tabletop is rubbed by leather cushions, electricity is collected by metal combs on an insulated brass support system with glass feet. Ramsden's machine enjoyed great popularity in the salons of the nobility, where experiments were conducted out of curiosity: 'electrifying' gallants and gallantesses mounted on insulating stools exchanged 'electric kisses'."
