Sukuwa shoulder mask, sculpted with a broad horseshoe-shaped - Lot 304
Sukuwa shoulder mask, sculpted with a broad horseshoe-shaped base, topped by a long neck supporting the sagittal-crested head, the face adorned with tribal scarification.
Managed by initiation societies (Vabong, Vadosong), these masks appear in the cycle of agrarian festivals.
They personify a feminine, illustrious face.
In the past, they were worn during pre-war ceremonies, but nowadays they appear mainly during apotropaic and rain-calling rites.
They are also associated with the cult of fertility.
Hardwood, old localized brown and honey patina, beautiful marks of use.
Mumuye, Nigeria.
