ROUBAUD Benjamin (Roquevaire 1811 - Algiers 1847) An African Watercolor over black pencil lines 24 x 18 cm (a few stains, leaf slightly torn at edge) An African in profile Watercolor over black pencil lines 23 x 17.5 cm (a few stains and brown spots, three holes in the corners, sheet slightly torn at the edges) Note: Benjamin Roubaud studied at the Beaux-Arts in Marseille before becoming a pupil of Louis Hersent in Paris. He was a painter, caricaturist and illustrator. He began his career in magazines such as Charivari, where he quickly made a name for himself with his humorous drawings, critical of French life and the politics of the day. He was particularly inspired by Algeria, where he spent several years. He worked particularly for L'Illustration. Drawings from this period were published in numerous works in the 1840s, including La galerie royale des costumes, Les troupiers d'Afrique and Album d'Afrique.
