Note: "Before 1947, Goetz's drawings underwent a change. He gradually detached himself from his Surrealist impregnation. His images and constructions became purer and simpler, and he gave increasing importance to line and stroke, which became the very material of composition. From 1950 to 1960, his work became increasingly geometric. Shapes were stripped down and finally separated from each other in a richly colored space. However, Goetz did not renounce depth in favor of surface. Volume treatment disappeared, but the backgrounds diversified: colors brightened and new ranges appeared. By 1971, his art represented a fusion between the exterior and his inner world. He moved away from the concrete world, and his pictorial semantics reached a cosmic, planetary dimension. Jean-Pierre Geay, his friend and poet, refers to Goetz's new way of representing space as "figuralism"."
