From 1922 onwards, René Buthaud, constantly on the lookout for new techniques, created vases in the Art Deco spirit, with monochrome designs modeled and reproduced in engraving, an art for which he had been awarded the Prix de Rome in 1914. His pioneering designs earned him a place on the admissions committee for the highly publicized 1925 Decorative Arts exhibition.
The mold for this vase, formerly in the artist's private collection and later part of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Bordeaux collection, was exhibited there in 1976 as part of the "Céramiques de René Buthaud" exhibition. Catalog by Jacqueline du Pasquier: p.54 n°22 & p.55 repr.
