Karabagh carpet (warp, weft and wool pile), South Caucasus, circa 1930-1950 300 x 157 cm This rug features a series of three navy-blue poly-lobed medallions, extended by two pendants on a plain raspberry ground and navy-blue counterground with geometric floral decoration. A narrow red border with geometric flower garlands is framed by two counter-borders. Karabagh means "black garden" and refers to a region in the southern part of Azerbaijan. It became an important weaving center, with the creation of numerous factories, as early as the 17th century, under the impetus of Muslim and Christian craftsmen. During the 19th century, European-style rose carpets were produced here, based on French cartoons.
