Karabagh means "black garden" and refers to a region in the southern part of Azerbaijan. It became an important weaving center, with the creation of numerous factories, as early as the 17th century, under the impetus of Muslim and Christian craftsmen. During the 19th century, European-style rose carpets were produced here, based on French cartoons.
"The presence of Kurdish and Armenian populations, especially around Shusha in the South Caucasus (...), contributed to the spread of Karabagh carpet weaving".
