Antique "Talor" quiver with poisoned blowpipe darts. - Lot 287
Antique "Talor" quiver with poisoned blowpipe darts. The pin is carved with a seated figure with a deformed face, and the top of the lid with a flower in relief (it contains three darts). Palm wood, bone, beautiful rattan and bamboo clisses, old wear marks, small crack on lid and receptacle. Dayak, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. 37.5 x 11 cm. Note: Tolors were used by Dayak tribes to hold blowpipe darts for hunting. The body of the quiver is made up of a bamboo tube and a lid at the top, essential for protecting hunters from darts dipped in a powerful poison used to put their prey to sleep. The pin attached to the bamboo tube with woven rattan was used to fasten the quiver to the hunter's belt. In Borneo, hunting was associated with physical and spiritual dangers, so pins were often carved, as on this fine example, with a guardian figure to protect the hunter from misfortune and evil spirits.
