ROUBAUD Benjamin (Roquevaire 1811 - Algiers 1847) Soldier of the Black Guard of the Emperor of Morocco Watercolor over black pencil lines 22.5 x 17.5 cm Titled lower right Soldat de la garde noire de l'empereur de Maroc (Soldier of the Black Guard of the Emperor of Morocco) (some browning, slight edge tears) Mehari, camel at high speed Watercolor over black pencil lines 18 x 23 cm Titled and dated lower right Méhari, chameau à grande vitesse 1838 (stains and browning, leaf slightly torn at edge) Note: Benjamin Roubaud was a student at the Beaux-Arts in Marseille before becoming a pupil of Louis Hersent in Paris. He was a painter, caricaturist and illustrator. He began his career in magazines such as Charivari, where he quickly made a name for himself with his humorous drawings, critical of French life and the politics of the day. He was particularly inspired by Algeria, where he spent several years. He worked particularly for L'Illustration. Drawings from this period were published in numerous works in the 1840s, including La galerie royale des costumes, Les troupiers d'Afrique and Album d'Afrique.
