Melayer carpet (cotton warp and weft, wool pile), Northwest Persia, circa 1930-1950 209 x 136 cm The rug features a central red octagon hooked and extended by two arrowhead pendants on a navy blue background decorated with the Herati motif. This motif consists of a lozenge of curved stems stems, enclosing a rosette and surmounted by a palmette at each apex, repeated ad infinitum, with four falciform leaves next to each other. This design adorned Herat carpets (to which it owes its name). A wide red border with flower garlands is framed by numerous counter-borders. Wear, fraying and damaged selvages
