CÉZARD (1924-1977) - Lot 76
CÉZARD (1924-1977) Plate 2 - Rigolus and Tristus illustration India ink/blue crayon with color tracing paper Signed and numbered 369 (minor soiling, annotations in margin "en réserve PIF 08 1261 p37") 50 x 37.8 cm Note: Les Rigolus et les Tristus is a comic strip series created in 1969 by Jean Cézard (drawing and script) for the newspaper Pif Gadget, which appeared regularly until 1973, alternating with the adventures of Arthur le fantôme justicier. Episodes of the series were republished by Pif Gadget in the 1980s and 1990s, after the author's death. Located in the "Lepiédecheze" galaxy, the planet of the Rigolus and the Tristus is a bicolored world, red and green, on which Arthur the Phantom lands one fine day with his spaceship. There he discovers two warring peoples who have solved the problem of battle casualties in their own way. All the protagonists have to do is make their opponents laugh or cry, using puns to make them change sides and colors: red for the Rigolus, green for the Tristus. The idea immediately appealed to readers, and the series acquired its own autonomy, with Arthur making only short appearances. The series' dialogues are rich in puns, especially those of the Rigolus.
