JACOBSEN Antonio (1850-1921) The Champagne region Oil on canvas Signed lower right (accident and restoration in the center) 56 x 91.5 cm Note: LaChampagne steel liner, rigged as a four-masted schooner, launched by Compagnie Générale Transatlantique in May 1886 at the Penhoët shipyard (Saint-Nazaire). Length 150 m, beam 15.75 m. Gross tonnage: 6,726. 9,000 hp steam engine. Speed 17.5 knots. La Gascogne, La Bourgogne, La Bretagne and La Champagne form a series of four liners, all commissioned in 1886. Assigned to the Le Havre-New York line. Boarded twice, then repaired, she ran aground and broke in two on May 28, 1915 on her way back from the West Indies at the entrance to the port of Saint-Nazaire.
