DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO, YOMBE - Lot 89
DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO, YOMBE Male figure seated on a barrel, flattened mitre-shaped headdress, earthenware eyes, mouth open over a row of teeth, torso decorated with painted scarification marks. The necklace is not original. Both forearms have been broken off. In the Bakongo cultural universe, which had been in close contact for several centuries with sailors and merchants from Europe, the barrel took on a specific symbolism, that of the trade and riches brought by the whites, which they tried to attract to themselves by making propitiatory or commemorative statues, an integral part of a veritable "cargo cult". Height 43.5 cm On base Provenance: Christie's, London, December 6, 1995, n°131
