It appeared in Japan at the end of the 13th century before being codified and popularized by the actor and playwright Ze'ami (1363-1443). Noh follows a set of very strict rules and codes which govern the shape of the stage, the music, the movements and the voice of the actors, the costumes and, of course, the masks which are worn almost exclusively by the main actor (or shite) of the Noh plays and occasionally by the secondary actor (or tsure) if the latter interprets a female role.
