Keschan souf carpet in silk (warp, weft and wool pile), cent - Lot 160
Keschan souf carpet in silk (warp, weft and wool pile), central Persia, circa 1920 200 x 100 cm. Kechan was an early city renowned for the cultivation of mulberry trees and the spinning of silk. Kachan fabrics and shawls were famous in the Sephardic period (16th-18th c.) and many "Polish" carpets were woven there. From the second half of the 19th century, Kechan again played an important role in the Persian production of quality carpets, especially thanks to Mostashem, the weaver who gave his name to quality carpets. This carpet is decorated with a double raspberry-red crenellated mihrabs on a golden-yellow ground, enhanced by an elegant decoration of stylized polychrome floral scrolls and palmettes. The whole composition is embellished with four spandrels with cartouches. An ivory border with a succession of small floral cartouches and elongated cartouches is framed by four raspberry red and ivory counter-borders.
