Isfahan carpet (cotton warp and weft, wool pile), central Pe - Lot 265
Isfahan carpet (cotton warp and weft, wool pile), central Persia, ca. 1930-1950 "The ancient capital of Sephardic Persia is one of the most monumentally rich cities in all of Iran. According to a Persian saying, Isfahan nesfe jaha, "Isfahan is the most beautiful city in the world" (...). The foundation of Isfahan goes back to a very ancient time. Its first name, Atran, was changed to Gabian by the Achaemenids who made it the seat of an important satrapy. The city continued to play an important role under the Sefevids and the Sassanids. (...). In the 18th century, when the court moved to Isfahan, in addition to palaces and mosques, "Kharkhaneh" were built, i.e. royal workshops which included warehouses and factories fitted out to accommodate artists and craftsmen. The carpet factories occupied a great place there and produced splendid models with floral drawing, very often carried out in silk and in invaluable thread. (...). The tradition of weaving at home developed during the 18th and 19th centuries and its roots are so deep that it remains unchanged today. In each family, the women who stay at home have one or more looms on which they weave the carpets ordered by merchants who provide them with the design and the wool. (...). The carpets of Isfahan rarely have less than fourteen colors and three of them, characteristic, are always present: blue gray, ivory and red." Bibliographic reference: Sabahi T, "Splendors of the carpets of the East", Ed. Atlas, Paris 1987, p. 143 to 146. The carpet is enhanced by an elegant stylized floral decoration in polychrome on a red background. A tobacco border with flower garland is framed by four counter-borders (good condition) 411 x 311cm
