He is best known as a genre painter and horse artist. He was for a long time the guest of the Spanish Riding School. In addition, he devoted himself to the representation of the history of war. He made landscape illustrations and was the illustrator of many equestrian books. He was a member of the Siebener Club, an association of artists, mainly architects, such as Josef Hoffmann, Joseph Maria Olbrich und Joseph Urban, from which the Vienna Secession movement emerged. In addition to military scenes, he painted scenes depicting life in Vienna and the imperial family, the main subjects of his genre paintings.
