FANG - GABON - Lot 88
FANG - GABON Head of an ancestor with a long neck in carved and patinated wood (small wear to the patina) Height : 39 cm Height : 39 cm Note : The single betsi heads, collected for the most part in Gabon, seem to have coexisted with the standing statuettes until the beginning of the 20th century, not constituting an archaic form of eyema-byeri, as some authors have suggested. Most of these heads, of imposing size due to the fact that they were perched on a long monoxyle neck, were of very expressive workmanship, with often oversized circular brass eyes. Among the Fang, spiritual life permeated all ways of thinking and living. If they admitted the existence of a creative deity and a primordial hero, they expected everything from their own family ancestors: luck, fertility of women, success in hunting and wealth.
