PUNU - GABON and REPUBLIC OF CONGO - Lot 74
PUNU - GABON and REPUBLIC OF CONGO Moukudji face mask made of wood with white clay patina and black coating, headdress made of two sculpted lobes. (heavy wear, frontal diamond heavily rubbed) Height : 29 cm 29 cm - Depth : 15 cm Note : This mask belongs to the Moukoudji society which operates from the left bank of the Ogooué in Gabon to Kibangou in Congo. It is in the category of masks dancing on stilts. The fine and elegant face is topped by a headdress made of two sculpted lobes. The face is traditionally anointed with white clay, the forehead bears a diamond-shaped traditional tattoo that is repeated on the temples. The moukoudji always materializes the spirit of a deceased person and does not appear only for funerals. It manifests itself through various sung and musical performances that are quite diverse and where politics and the life of the society are based. Moukoudji is neither man nor woman. He is a spirit who is given a human appearance so that humans can speak to him and in return understand his own answers. The dancers perform acrobatic figures with their legs attached to stilts that raise them two or three meters high.
