CONGO - Lot 61
CONGO Nailed fetish or nkondi in carved wood with nails, glass and ropes (cracks) Height : 43 cm 43 cm high Note : The nail fetishes or nkondi are wooden sculptures, antropomorphic or zoomorphic, covered with numerous accessories reputed to be magical and with nails or metal blades bearing commitments or oaths. They contain medicines in their ventral and sometimes dorsal cavities: hair, teeth, nails, etc. The faces are generally sculpted with care, unlike the rest of the body which is hidden by all these accessories. These statues do not evoke an ancestor, unlike the reliquaries, and only serve as a support for the commitments and oaths pronounced before the community with the help of the fetishist (the nganga) who inserted the nails and blades on behalf of the owner of the statue and who, given his relations with the supernatural world, had the power to punish those who did not keep their promises.
