The majorat was instituted during the reign of Napoleon I. In order to be able to pass on his title to his descendants, the applicant had to allocate him a patrimony bringing a pension, according to the conditions set out in the decree of 1st March 1808. The aim was to enable the successive holders to maintain their rank. The transmission of the title was always done in order of primogeniture and from male to male. Under Louis Philippe, the majorat was abolished in 1835, but the rules of transmission remained the same.
