[PHOTOGRAOPHY - HIGH KNOWLEDGE] - Lot 131
[PHOTOGRAOPHY - HIGH KNOWLEDGE] Georges I TAIRRAZ (1868-1924) : The Great Gendarme on the Grépon with two mountaineers. C.1890. Silver print, 67 x 18.5 cm (at sight). Note : Son of Joseph Tairraz, precursor of mountain photography (he made the first photograph of Mont Blanc in 1861), Georges was apprenticed in Paris to the photographer Pierre Petit. Like his father, he became a mountain guide and photographer, building up a collection of silver bromide negatives on giant 50 × 60 cm plates with remarkable detail. His son Georges Tairraz II and his grandson Pierre will continue to perpetuate this hundred-year-old tradition of guide-photographers who are part of the history of photography.
