[ITALY] Antoine Alexandre Joseph Cardon dit Cardon le Vieux (1739-1822): "Grotta vicino a S. Maria Capella Vecchia", 18th century. Engraving. Dim. bowl: 15.6 x 26 cm - Total dim.: 22.8 x 34 cm Mentions: 20 / Ant.Cardon fecit. / D.Da.Mr. Changuion [François Changuion (1694-1777)], in charge of the affairs of S. M. Britannique in Naples in 1764. Con PrivReg. dirt and damp Note: A Brussels painter, Antoine Cardon spent three years in Rome as a government resident, then went to Naples where he specialized in engraving. In 1764 he produced an album of 29 plates of "Views of Naples and its surroundings" based on works by Guiseppe Bracci, including the one shown (no. 20), a view of the Cave of the Cordiers in the Pizzoparleone Mountain in Naples, then other series based on Gabriele Ricciardelli, or book illustrations (notably the four volumes of Etruscan, Greek and Roman Antiquities (1766-1767) by Hancarville).
