Lamber Doomer (1622-1700) (draftsman) - Pierre Quentin Chedel (1705-1763) (engraver): "Entrance to the cave or purgatory of St. Patrice in Ireland. known by the ghosts that are claimed to appear there. The ancients believe it was one of the Gates of Hell". c.1760. Etching, 26.7 x 37 cm. Mentions: Doomer delin - Chedel.sc. - A Paris ches le Ve de F. Chereau - rue S. Jacques aux 2. Golden Pillars. Freckles and stains
Note: Produced between 1755-1763, this engraving represents the entrance to the cave on the island of Lake Derg, where the origin of the legend of the purgatory of St. Patrice is to be found. In fact it is probably the entrance to the Gouttières caves in Marmoutier near Tours that Saint Patrick would have visited when he was the ward of Saint Martin of Tours.
