[GREECE] Marie-Gabriel-Florent-Auguste de Choiseul-Gouffier (1752-1817): "Vue d'une caverne servant d'entrée aux galleries souterraines de Milo" c.1780. Engraving. Dim. basins: 18.5 x 25.4 cm - Total dim.: 43 x 27.2 cm. Mentions : Pl.6 / Designed by the Count of Choiseul_Gouffier / Engraved by J.B. Tillard / APDR. Minute stitches Note : Above another engraving representing a "white marble tomb in the Isle of Siphanto" drawn by J.B. Hilaire. These two plates are illustrations taken from the book written by Choiseul: "Voyage pittoresque de la Grèce." first volume which appears in deliveries and by subscription, from 1778, the title page bearing the date 1782. "...I was led some distance from the shore, to a cave whose aspect was too interesting for me not to draw a picture of it at once. It served as a retreat for shepherds who boiled their milk there, & as a vestibule to galleries whose use would be difficult to determine."
