[VAR] "View of the Chapel from inside the Grotto in which St Margaret's did Penance, Vulgarly Named The Balm drawn in 1788." 18th century. Engraving, 25.5 x 37.5 cm. Partly signed, folds. Note: Rare engraving (another copy is kept in the Arbaud Museum in Aix-en-Provence) showing an ancient view of the sanctuary of the Sainte-Baume, or cave of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine with the inner chapel also called "baldachin Louis XI", and an astonishing stuffed crocodile hanging from the ceiling. The complex was destroyed in 1793 at the instigation of the Convention delegates Barras and Freron. It should be noted that a very similar crocodile can still be seen today as an ex-voto overlooking the entrance to the chapel of Notre Dame des Anges in Pignans (83), about fifty kilometres away.
