Note: Plate n°12 from the Album "Vues des Pyrénées" (1st notebook), published in Paris from 1831 to 1833 by Engelmann and Lemercier. French painter and lithographer, Louise Joséphine Sarazin de Belmont was the favourite pupil of Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes (1750-1819), whose studio was open to women. Of exceptional longevity, she exhibited at the Salon of 1812 under the Empire and was still present at the Salon of 1867, under Napoleon III. In order to create the landscapes of which she became a speciality, she travelled in Europe (Italy between 1824 and 1826, Germany in 1838), and in France (she was one of the first to paint the forest of Fontainebleau), Brittany and the Pyrenees where she stayed in 1830. In order to be as close as possible to the landscapes, she settled alone in the Hautes Pyrénées, in the Val de Géret, for three months in a shepherd's hut. This episode caused a sensation in the press and literature of the time, quoted in particular in the Guide Richard or in Mary Summer's novel "Un mariage au Pont d'Espagne", published in 1867.
