DOGON - SATIMBE - Lot 16
DOGON - SATIMBE Ritual mask called "satimbe" made of natural polychrome wood with a crusting patina, it is surmounted by a woman sitting on a throne with open arms, she is wearing fringes of string decorated with plastic beads and cauries and dressed in vegetable fibers. 60 's High. Width: 63 cm - Depth: 20 cm (wear and patina of use) Note: The satimbe masks have the peculiarity of being surmounted by a seated figure representing Ya Sigine, a woman whose role is to be the counterweight of the male omnipotence in the social and political order within Dogon society. Ya Sigine is consistently represented on the satimbic masks she surmounts: her gaze is stretched towards the horizon, her chest is straight, but above all her inordinately long and bent arms are stretched towards the sky. The mask itself is stylized, its features are geometric.
