JAPAN Vase in tortoise shell decorated with takamaki-e gold lacquer, a peacock near rocks, peonies, pines and waterfall on one side, the other representing a dignitary and his horse, the opening with a wide flat rim highlighted with swastika and a collar, two large handles in the shape of a triple square spiral to enhance the belly. The vase rests on a four-legged, four-legged stand with a terrace, made of wood decorated with geometric and stylized gold lacquered motifs. A cartouche on the belly gives the title of the scene, "Sumidagawa, Miyakodori no koji", inspired by a print from Hiroshige's "Old Sites of the Eastern Capital" series.
